Inner State is based in Lancaster and was set up in 1992 as a result of Andy and Christine working together for Age Exchange Theatre in Blackheath. There was a ‘phone call one day from Andy saying “I’ve got this great idea !” … and the rest is history.
The Inner State style arose mainly through scripts never being quite ready in time, so a level of ‘ad libbing’ had to go into each production.
Very little gets written down these days and they are more likely to work from a scenario than an actual scripted piece, although a full length show is a different matter.
Accidental though this may have been, it means that the two performers have developed a great skill in dealing with an audience and always include them in the action in a very real sense.
Both Andy and Christine are accomplished musicians, and include songs in their shows wherever possible.
Over the years they have played music from street corner to stage and enjoy influences from a range of styles. Andy still writes songs and is currently working on a show to cover the glory days of the pirates.
Meanwhile Christine keeps busy making new props and costumes although the workshop is now overflowing.
